From the popular neighborhoods of Cali, where he began his journey in 2000, to his arrival in Miami with his “Romantic Summer” event format, the career of Colombian José Holmes Muñoz Rodallega (February 28, 1984), known as the Great DJ Holmes Salsa, reflects the evolution of a profile that has managed to connect the essence of salsa with new audience dynamics.
His history within music begins on local stages, where he quickly achieves recognition for his ability to evoke, through romantic salsa, an emotional connection with the public. With the passage of time, this style positions him as one of the pioneers within the salsa DJ scene in Colombia, in a genre that coexists with other aspects such as salsa de golpe, guaguancó or timba.
Over more than two decades, Holmes has developed a proposal based on the creation of its own entertainment formats around romantic salsa. Events such as La Noche Romántica, Romantic Summer, Free Cover Salsa, and the White Festival Salsa are part of a line of experiences that integrate music, interaction, and community building.
Its proposal has reached more than 50 cities around the world, evidencing the validity of the genre when it adapts to new forms of consumption and manages to connect with diverse audiences.
“What makes us different is thanks to teamwork. We put together a team of professional musicians, a bet of a DJ show that animates an interactive party with the public, with a great production of screens, videos, karaoke lyrics, so that people can sing and appreciate them,” explains Holmes, whose YouTube channel has more than 300 million views.
One of the most relevant moments in its positioning occurred during the pandemic, when through digital content it managed to maintain an active connection with the public, becoming a close figure for thousands of people in a complex global context. From then on, its presence on social networks was strengthened, expanding its reach and consolidating a community that today transcends the face-to-face.
In addition to his career as a DJ, Holmes is the founder of Bailatino, a project based in Cali from where he promotes the training and circulation of salsa as a cultural practice. His arrival in Miami with the “Romantic Summer” event, scheduled for June 12, marks a new chapter in his career.
The meeting will be held at The Guitar Hotel, a stage that has hosted presentations by international artists such as 50 Cent, Tiësto and Maroon 5, among others. In its first international edition, the event managed to sell out its box office in less than 24 hours, through global ticketing platforms, reflecting a high demand since its announcement. A week after its release, tickets are no longer available.
This step not only represents a geographical expansion, but also the consolidation of a profile that has been able to move between the salsa tradition and the new forms of entertainment consumption, keeping alive a genre that continues to find spaces for renewal.
In a context in which Latin music continues to expand its global reach, DJ Holmes’ career opens the conversation about the role of DJs in the construction of cultural experiences and in the validity of traditional genres within contemporary scenarios.
