The concert was a musical journey into the atmosphere of Havana nights in the 1950s and 1960s, the golden age that saw the rise of the filin—a genre of Cuban romantic song that fuses vocal jazz and bolero. Aymée Nuviola, one of the most distinctive voices in Latin music, demonstrated why she has forged an international career that masterfully encompasses jazz, bolero, bossa nova and classical music.
A Night of Filin, Bolero and Jazz
The repertoire of “Havana Nocturne” presented immortal classics by essential composers such as José Antonio Méndez, César Portillo de la Luz, Marta Valdés and Meme Solís. With masterful interpretations of songs such as Obsession, Perfidia and Vete de Mí, Aymée Nuviola managed to evoke personal stories and memories of her hometown, Havana, reaffirming her intimate connection with a genre she inherited from influences such as Omara Portuondo and Elena Burke.
The show had the brilliant musical direction of Paulo Simeón and the outstanding participation of the pianist and teacher Kemuel Roig, whose execution and arrangements enriched each piece. The impeccable band that accompanied Nuviola guaranteed a night of elegance, sophistication and passion, receiving a standing ovation from the audience at the SESC JAZZ FEST.
