Life always moves between contrasts: joy and melancholy, the good and the not so good. It is precisely from this back and forth that “Dulce y Amarga” (Sweet and Bitter), Duplat’s new single with maestro Andrés Cepeda, is born. An honest song, not seeking embellishment or superficiality, but rather speaking of what it truly means to live: accepting that nothing is perfect and that great joys often come accompanied by difficult moments.
The inspiration came after a night at a music awards show, where Duplat felt a mixture of sadness and happiness that later inspired him to transform into music. In a writing session planned with Andrés Cepeda, in just 25 minutes, lyrics and melody found their form, with an immediate chemistry between the two artists.
“I think this song will mark a turning point in my musical career,” Duplat confesses. “It’s a song where I met an artist at a specific moment in my life, with the urgent need to say something in my songs; to have a message, a thesis, and a vision of the world. Andrés and I met in that same quest: to talk about life, not ephemeral things. For me, Dulce y Amarga sums up not only my way of seeing music, but life itself. It’s my favorite song to date.”
For his part, Andrés Cepeda states, “I met Duplat backstage at a concert in Bogotá, and after talking for a while, we realized we were going to become easy friends. A couple of weeks later, he came to my house, sat down at the piano, and within 45 minutes we had the first song: “Dulce y Amarga” in our hands. That same afternoon, we finished recording the demo and were very happy with the result. I think it’s a very good collaboration, in which our musical styles understand each other perfectly and blend very well.
We’ll definitely be collaborating much more often.” With the piano as its central axis and the complicity between two voices that meet at different moments in their lives and musical careers but with the same need to communicate, “Dulce y Amarga” becomes a musical manifesto: a reminder that living is learning to embrace the beautiful and the painful, because both are essential.
The production of “Dulce y Amarga” reinforces the song’s pop/rock essence with a deeply emotional sound. The song was composed by Duplat and Andrés Cepeda, and was produced by Duplat himself, who gave it his signature signature, as the talented artist he is.
On the instruments, Duplat handled the piano and vocals, and Cepeda the guitar and vocals, achieving a sonic dialogue laden with sensitivity. The ensemble is complemented by Jacobo Álvarez’s drums, Guillermo Vadalá’s bass, and Andrés Cruz’s guitar, musicians who bring solidity and nuance to the song’s atmosphere.
The recording was done at Audiovisión studios in Bogotá, under the direction of recording engineer David Dueñas, mixing by Uriel Dorfman, while the mastering was done by Lewis Pickett, ensuring a wonderful sound finish.
“Dulce y Amarga” leads us to understand that “nothing is perfect in life, that sadness is inevitable and normal, and life consists of suffering and enjoying. Both are equally important and essential in life.” Inevitably, Andrés Cepeda’s voice and Duplat’s, both literally and poetically, connected very well, and managed to translate into music, something they both agreed on as a brief interpretation of life.
Following his previous musical release, “Déjame Ser,” and the award he received from the Bogotá City Council for his proven work in the city, his achievements as an artist, and the significant contribution he has made with his music to the nation’s capital, Duplat performed two classical piano recitals in the cities of Cali and Leticia and will accompany his friend and fellow Colombian artist, Manuel Medrano, on his tour of Latin America and Spain.
Andrés Cepeda, meanwhile, is preparing to launch his tour of Colombia’s main venues, presenting his latest studio album, “Bogotá Deluxe.” This tour will span 19 cities in Colombia.
