Jessy Díaz – “Baho Kende”

August 25, 2026

Cuban singer and percussionist Jessy Díaz presents her new recording, “Baho Kende,” a vibrant interpretation of a classic Cuban song with deep roots in the tradition of son and sonora music.

Born in Matanzas, Cuba, Jessy Díaz developed her musical career through percussion and musicology. She has performed with respected Cuban ensembles including the Matanzas Symphony Orchestra, the University of the Arts Symphony Orchestra in Havana, Orquesta Failde, and Suns of Cuba.

Since 2017, Jessy has been based between Miami and Atlanta, where she continues her work as a performer, educator, and advocate for Cuban and Afro-Cuban music.

“Baho Kende” was originally composed by Alberto Zayas and became widely known through recordings by La Sonora Matancera with Celia Cruz, as well as a later version by El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico.

For her new interpretation, Jessy Díaz returns to the traditional sound of the Cuban sonora, bringing together a talented ensemble of musicians. Efraín Chibás “Pacho”, known for his work with Los Van Van, handles production and piano.

The recording also features Mauro Moisés Cabrejas on bass, Aniel Castillo on timbales and cowbell, Adel González on congas, bongó, maracas and güiro, and Tonito González López on trumpet.

The arrangement preserves the spirit of the original while giving the song a fresh and energetic sound. A trumpet solo highlights the montuno section, adding another touch of Cuban flavor to the recording.

With her background in son, danzón, bolero, Latin jazz, and salsa, Jessy Díaz continues to celebrate and preserve the richness of Cuban musical traditions through her work.
