Silvano Monasterios – The River

Silvano Monasterios is a Venezuelan‑born jazz pianist, composer and producer whose music blends deep Latin American rhythmic roots with contemporary jazz composition and improvisation.

Born in Caracas, Monasterios has been recognized for his virtuosic playing, rich compositional voice, and expressive fusion of Venezuelan influences and jazz tradition.

His latest album The River was released on April 4, 2025 as a suite for a nine‑piece ensemble, commissioned by Chamber Music America’s New Jazz Works Program with support from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.

The project showcases Monasterios’s dynamic artistry, intricate rhythms and strong cultural expression, presenting a flowing musical journey that reflects life, memory and resilience.

The River features performances by an outstanding ensemble including Troy Roberts (tenor sax), Nestor Torres (flute), Alex Norris (trumpet & flugelhorn), Jeff Lederer (clarinets), Ricky Rodriguez (bass), Jimmy MacBride (drums), Luisito Quintero (percussion) and Juan Diego Villalobos (vibraphone). The combination of instruments creates rich textures and layered rhythmic interaction throughout the album.

The suite includes compositions such as “The River (Opening),” “Dance On The Wire,” “Against The Current,” “Carmen Elena,” “Ambar,” “Ambar’s Courage” and “The River Between Us,” each blending elements of Latin jazz, improvisational harmony, and expressive ensemble interplay.

Critics have praised The River for its emotional depth, compositional cohesion, and cultural resonance, calling it a compelling musical work that flows with elegance and purpose.
